My name is A’Layla Goffney, and I’m a Class of 2028 student-athlete at Coldspring-Oakhurst High School in Texas. Basketball is more than just a sport to me. It’s my escape, my peace, and something that gives me a chance to create a better future for myself. Growing up in a small town, I know there are bigger opportunities out there, and basketball is one of the ways I hope to reach them.

One of my biggest reasons for playing is my grandma, who passed away in a tragic accident. She never got the chance to be in the stands cheering me on, but I carry her in my heart every time I step on the court. I play for myself, my family, and especially for her. When things get hard, I remind myself why I started and who I’m doing it for.

Outside of basketball, I love shopping, hanging out with my family and friends, and playing the piano for my church. I also really enjoy school because it’s another escape for me. Being the oldest child, I help my mom out a lot and have responsibilities at home, so school gives me a chance to focus on myself and my goals.

Academically, I have a 3.9 GPA and I’m ranked 12th in my class, but my goal is to make it into the top 10. I take my education seriously because I know basketball won’t last forever, and I want to have a successful future beyond the game.

My dream is to play college basketball, earn my degree, and make my family proud. I’m not just playing to win games. I’m playing for the little girl who has big dreams, for my grandma who I wish could see me play, and for the future I’m working hard to build.

A'Layla Goffney is a crafty, scoring-minded point guard who has a natural ability to create offense and get downhill. She does a great job utilizing her mid-range game and floater to finish around bigger defenders. She plays with confidence, changes speeds effectively, and has the ability to create her own shot. She's also a capable perimeter shooter who can stretch the defense and make opponents respect her from beyond the arc.

Defensively, A'Layla is an active and instinctive guard who averages approximately three steals per game. She has the tools to become a disruptive on-ball defender, particularly as she develops a more consistent habit of applying full-court pressure.

As she continues to develop, I'd like to see her improve her decision-making when attacking the paint, particularly recognizing opportunities to kick the ball out and create shots for teammates rather than forcing difficult finishes. Overall, A'Layla is a productive young guard with a strong offensive foundation, good defensive instincts, and plenty of room to grow as a complete point guard. - L3
